COVER STORY OF ‘THE ROMANCE OF INDIAN COFFEE’

By P.T. Bopanna cover girl

While working on my book ‘The Romance of Indian Coffee’, I spotted this Moplah girl (see picture) picking coffee berries at an estate in Coorg. She had light eyes which caught my attention. When I asked her whether I could take her pictures, she bashfully agreed. She was accompanied by her mother who was also picking coffee. Her mother was very excited that her daughter was going to be photographed.

I sent the picture to my young friend Franz Mendonsa (in picture), who was studying for his Master’s in Entertainment Technology at the world renowned Carnegie Mellon University. He came out with this cover page (in picture) which is a unique cover for an Indian book.

When the book came out in 2011, my friends wanted to know who had ‘modeled’ for the cover page! I take this opportunity to thank my friend Franz for the brilliant cover design. Franz had stayed with us for a month while studying engineering at the BMS College of Engineering in Bengaluru. Now he is a top-notch entertainment technology professional in the United States.
